With the raising stakes of Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley and his Sports Direct retailer group for Umbro, the new speculations about the future of Adidas as the main sponsor for United’s jersey is now begins to spread. Newcastle contract with Adidas will last until the next season.

Last month Mike Ashley’s Sports Direct retailing group raised its stake in the British sports brand to 29.9 per cent, according The Times. Mr Ashley’s manoeuvre came after the announcement of a £285 million recommended offer for Umbro from Nike.

Umbro supplies the kit for six English Premier League clubs and more than 40 football clubs abroad, including Portugal’s Benfica and Israel’s Hapoel Tel Aviv. Umbro’s current contract with the Football Association to be the official supplier of England kit until 2014.

If Mike Ashley finally launch a full bid for Umbro, it’s most likely that Newcastle United will change its current jersey from Adidas to Umbro.
