If there’s something to cheer us up from last night defeat was the fact that the ‘Real One and Only United’ team have youngsters to be proud of. At least we have three very promising players to watch.

Newcastle United Capital One League Cup 3rd round match

On his post match review, Pardew also expressed his delight at our second strings performance, and claiming that with more lucky circumstances, they deserved a better result.

“I thought the lads were terrific,” he enthused. “They would have a got a lot of confidence from that. I thought we were as every bit as good as Manchester United for an away team.”

I was so impressed by James Tavernier’s performance while playing in left wing-back and has given a merely quiet evening for Danny Welbeck.

Tav shows great vision in defence and not afraid going up to attack his other youngsters opponent. I watch this lad played in our couple pre-seasons match and from there I have a sight that he could be our next star in the future.

James Tavernier battle for the ball

Gael Bigirimana, the latest Toon acquisition this summer also shown he’s more mature than his age. Coming in second-half as Tiote’s substitute, Bigi displayed the same work rate and ability of his mentor. With couple more games to experience, he was our next gem.

Shane Ferguson, with some first team experience before last night he was one of the mature youngster we had this season, and I believe he’s ready to give a chance as regular first team choice. His pacey movement and great cross helped Cissé to booked his first goal this season.

All in all from last night game fact is that we have the future in hand but also need something to work out in order to get the better of Haris Vuckic and Dan Gosling. Both are having an off game performance, still have time to develop but it’s all their own choice to deliver something quickly or being left behind.

Newcastle finally edged the fighting spirit of Coventry City with a 3-2 win at Ricoh stadium tonight. It was the game in the League Cup 2nd round that brings the extra time after a very late-late equaliser from the Sky Blues skipper Scott Dann in the injury time.

Newcastle took the lead in 21 minutes, thanks to Charles N’Zogbia effort, although the goal was later being describe as an own goal, but Zog deserves the credit in the process.

17 minutes later, James Milner doubled the Magpies lead with a shot from the right which catches out keeper Marshall with the ball bouncing beyond his dive and into the far corner.

The home side get one goal inside the injury time before the half-time break through Clinton Morrison from a swift City breakaway.

In the second-half we look comfortable to get through to the third round as we control the game much, and have Michael Owen coming into the field in the 75min replacing Geremi. But the referee seems not in the rush to blow the final whistle even the clock get runs into the 3rd minutes into the injury time that was scheduled for just two minutes.

Desperately looking for the equaliser, City win a throw in on the right into the penalty area, where their skipper Scott Dann arriving with pace to head low into the bottom corner with Shay Given rooted to the spot.

In the first half of the extra time, Newcastle took the second advantage in 97minutes when City players fail to clear N’Zogbia corner. And just like the Bolton match, this time Enrique took the loose ball 40 yards out before sending a delightful pass over the top for Owen to race on to before finishing side-footed past the on-rushing Marshall. 3-2 for Newcastle!

The City players then keep rushing to get back into the game and force it into penalty shoot-out, and they almost got it when in two minutes before the end of extra time Shay Given saves Simpson’s low strike, and rebound to safety before Morrison can take the loose ball.

We may have to admit that we’re far from the top four placement this season and for the next 2 or 3 years from now, but we can expect some silverwares on domestic League Cup or the FA Cup during the process.

With a bit of luck, which is rarely to be seen coming to our side for the last ten years, Kevin Keegan has the plan to securing Newcastle’s first silverware since the last time we have any in 1969.

“It is one of two chances, if we are honest,” KK said in a pre-match interview before the League Cup away match to Coventry City. “We can win the FA Cup and we can win the Carling Cup.”

Newcastle record in the League Cup was not too impressive. The last time we reach the semi-finals was back in 1976. But there’s always hope and the Toon Army has plenty of that.

Newcastle team news ahead of today’s match saw Keegan could be without Oba Martins who suffers another groin injury in the match against Bolton last Saturday. Damien Duff also have knee problem. But skipper Michael Owen is set to start after scoring match-winning goal against the Trotters.

Meanwhile, Coventry City will be without keeper Kieran Westwood who suffered a dislocated thumb during their Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at the hands of Bristol City.

Newcastle away record against Coventry
2000/01: 2-0 (Shearer, Gallacher)
1999/00:1-4 (Domi)
1998/99: 5-1 (Shearer 2, Dabizas, Speed, Glass)
1997/98: 2-2 (Barnes, Lee)
1996/97: 1-2 (Shearer)
1995/96:1-0 (Watson)
1994/95: 0-0
1993/94:1-2 (o.g. Atherton)
