Habib Beye admits at the official site that he did not know he had scored the winner against Birmingham City until he heard the roar of the Toon Army.
The Senegal star ghosted in at the near post and headed the ball in for his first goal in Black-and-White shirt to snatch a last gasp three points for United win since last October.
“I didn’t know when I had scored because of the way I headed the ball I had my head down,” Beye told Newcastle World TV. “I just heard the fans in the stadium and then looked up and saw everyone celebrating.”
Meanwhile, full-back Celestine Babayaro has played his last game for Newcastle. Both defender and the club have reached an agreement today about the player payments for the most of his remaining months of Toon contract, which expires at the end of the season.
The 29-year-old defender earned an applause in February when he turned out for the club in United’s 2-1 league win over Liverpool, after which Roeder revealed that his younger brother David had died just hours earlier.
Sam Allardyce, who has a flu bug after the rainy Saturday’s match said he’s still feeling great and looking for more good news by getting some players back for Saturday’s game with Fulham at Craven Cottage.
“I have arranged a behind-closed doors game this week when we are hoping that the likes of Damien Duff, Abdoulaye Faye, Claudio Cacapa and Shola Ameobi will all play.” Big Sam said to ChronicleLive today.
He also said that Michael Owen expecting to be back with the rest of the first-team squad nearer the end of the week.
“And while Saturday will probably come too early for him he should certainly be back for the game with Derby County at St James’s Park a week on next Sunday.”
With the fact that United will have Oba Martins away on African Cup of Nations duty earlier next month, Allardyce is more concerned about getting Owen, who is still one of the greatest goalscorers in the world on his opinion, back in a black-and-white shirt.
