Alan Shearer may hold the record as Newcastle United player who scores the most goals, but did you know that the player who held the most appearances for the Magpies is a goalkeeper?
James “Jimmy” Lawrence was born February 16, 1885 in Glasgow. He plays for Newcastle United between 1904-1921.
Jimmy starts his football career when he joins Partick Athletic. He is then moved to Glasgow Perthshire. Although still playing for to Glasgow Perthshire, Jimmy has sporadically also played for Edinburgh side Hibernian when their regular custodian Harry Rennie was unavailable.
He later joined Newcastle in 1904 and was one of the United most longest player for eighteen years. Jimmy also still holds the record for making the most appearances for Newcastle United with 496 matches in total. From his total appearances in all league, Jimmy also held United League record with 432 appearances, Frank Hudspeth came in second with 2 games less.
Jimmy also make 64 appearances for the Magpies in FA Cup and 2 other league appearances. For the Scottish national team he has one occasion in a 1-1 draw with England at Goodison Park, Liverpool.
After his eighteen years of playing reach the end, Lawrence then moved into football’s management. His first appointment as a manager was with Second Division side South Shields(1922-1923) before joining Preston North End. He managed the Lilywhites until 1925, when he later relocated to Germany to manage a team in Karlsruhe.
After travelling acroos the European club, Jimmy Lawrence returned to Scotland in 1933 and elected as the chairman of Stranraer. He died while working at office in November 1934.
