Keepmoat stadium have pulled back an old memory to United goalkeeper Steve Harper. He said yesterday that when he played for hartlepool he watched Donny’s fans carried out a coffin.
“It was when they were having some big protests, and they carried a coffin, though I’m not sure if it was into the ground or out of the ground.” Harper told the Gazette, “It’ll probably have been 11 years ago. We drew – it was 2-2.”
And today, it was Kevin Keegan who “watch” his men being dugged into the grave inside a coffin. Keegan’s return to his hometown against the side he supported as child, let him down with a late goal win against Newcastle.
It was Stuart Elliott who won the game for Donny after (once again) a Toon defensive disaster. The scoreline could have been more embarrasing to us if Tim Krul who replaced Harper in second-half didn’t pull off some fine saves.
The Metz defender Sebastien Bassong has given a chance although he’s still on trial status for United. Geremi, who wear the arm band again today, being push back into the midfield after returning to pre-season training.
United had the chance to score in 16 minutes when awarded a free-kick on the edge of the box, but Geremi’s curler was headed clear. Doncaster, who will be playing in the Championship this season, also have the chance when Gareth Taylor saw Steve Harper was in out of position but his shot just wide.
Not much to tell about the second-half, or actually I was too sick to write anything right now, but the tragedy is coming after a terrible comedy defending by United defenders. It was the moment when on trial Bassong and Jose Enrique mix up each other and bumping into each other for Ben Smith’s long ball.
And the brightest Donny player today, Stuart Elliott tucked away a neat finish after stealing the loose ball from both Bassong and Enrique. Thanks alot Bassong, you can pack your bag and leave earlier in the morning and don’t comeback.
