George Robledo, The Way A Toon Army See Him

May 25th, 2008 by shearyadi

Today, when digging up my old articles from the early days of Magpies Zone on my computer, I found this interesting article about letters from someone in the past which I don’t know if he still alive now, or remember that he ever contacted me about our legendary player George Robledo.

image

My reaction for his first letter is very interested, as you know I’m collecting all the rare information about anything related to Newcastle United and the players. So I have quick reply him that day and get as quick second email respond from David. But unfortunately there’re only twice encounters between us, since then I have lost all my emails on my old email provider.

If you ever read this again David, his son, or someone else who is having relationship with Mr. David Kemp, please give him my warm greeting as an old friend. I’d love to hear from him again and still waiting for the photographs. Thanks!

The First Encounter, September 12, 2001

I have sent this info to the club and the match day prog but nobody seems interested and I just want the Toon Army to know about it. My son recently went on holiday to Chile with his girlfriend who is half Chilean. I asked him to see if he could find George Robledo’s grave as I thought I could remember that he died out there.

As lads in the early fifties he and his brother seemed amazingly exotic to us and he has always been one of my all time heroes. To cut a long story short they did eventually find the grave in a mausoleum for former football stars in the main cemetery in Santiago.

They left flowers and a message in Spanish saying that he would always be remembered in the Toon. They also took photographs of the grave. Is anybody interested? I cannot believe that I am the only Mag who remembers one of our greatest ever players.

The Secound Encounter, date unknown but still in the same year of 2001

imageI have been in touch with my son, who works in London to see about getting you the photographs and will let you have them as soon as possible. Robledo was one of two brothers who played for us from 1949 to 1953. Ted was a right half and an average player.

In to-day’s terms he was a squad player rather than a regular, but George was the real star. He scored 39 goals in one season, including the only goal when we beat Arsenal in the Cup Final in 1952. He and Milburn were a great combination. He was strong, quick, quite small, but thick set and very difficult to knock off the ball.

He had a wonderful eye for the goal and never knew when he was beaten. In a team of stars, he shone brighter than most and as a South American he stood out. Virtually every player in England was British at that time, so he had an air of glamour and the exotic about him.

Black hair, olive skin, different features, foreign name, he seemed like someone from another world to us. I think we signed the two brothers from Barnsley, and I believe that his father was Chilean and his mother from Yorkshire, but I am not so sure about that. Certainly his second name was Oliver, which may have been his mother’s maiden name.

I have never forgotten him and when I knew my son James was going to Chile with his girlfriend on holiday, I thought it was too good an opportunity to miss. I asked them to see if they could try to find his grave as I was pretty certain he had returned to Chile and I thought I had read of his death in The Journal.

I contacted the Chilean football websites and was advised to try searching the main cemetery in Santiago. I also discovered that Robledo was a great hero in Chile, one of their all -time top 20 players.

Steve Coppell Cries For Help from Madejski Stadium

May 24th, 2008 by shearyadi

After being painly relegated from the top flight in the final day despite won their last match, Reading will have to ballance the funds by releasing some of their star players who has high pay rates.

image

One player that is the most possible to leave is the England left-back Nicky Shorey. Coppell needs to adapt their finances to the Coca-Cola Championship, and will have to cut almost £500,000 from their weekly pay-outs and Nicky Shorey, who has served the club for seven years, is the main target from the likes of West Ham United, Aston Villa and Newcastle United.

“Nicky Shorey and a few others will be looked at as potential people to leave,” Nigel Howe, club’s chief executive said. “Nicky has made it clear for a long time that he hasn’t been too happy at the club. Well, let’s hope that somebody comes in with a good offer.”

Shorey has been linked with us when the previous manager is preparing his January transfers, but the Royals side is rejecting any offers from other Premier League club for their star player. Nicky was also said have signed new contract with them at that time, but now the table is turn and they have to release him to survive in the Championships league.

I wouldn’t mind if Keegan make a move for 27 years-old Shorey, who is still in the range of our “young players” policy, while one of today’s news already said that West Ham are ready to make £5m bid to take him move to Upton Park.

Meanwhile, Sam Vokes who is one of other player that has been linked for a move to St. James’s Park couple months ago, has completed his move from Bournemouth to Wolves in an undisclosed fees.

We Are Not Testing the Water or Anything Else

May 24th, 2008 by shearyadi

If anyone would take this utterly nonsense and completely self-deluded journalism as real then they must test their brain. I also would like to send a warning to that scum journalist who wrote the article to go to the doctor immediately.

image

No wonder Keegan has ban all Newcastle United players to talk to any press after the Everton match, as those journalists would love to write them as a Toon insider. The Scum has made a report today that Oba’s future in Newcastle is uncertain just because the new club policy to limited the player highest weekly wages only at £80,000 per-week.

They also write that new policy would be bad news for Michael Owen who has a £110,000 per-week deal with Toon. As Toon supporter, I don’t buy that news or anything else regarding to current players wage cut. It was exhibiting a lack of wisdom if we sell two of our best players at the moment because of that.

Although the soon-be-gone United chairman Chris Mort, on his statement recently, said that Newcastle would not pay players ridiculous wages, that doesn’t mean he will allowing any players who has done good to leave the club. I don’t think Keegan would agree, and I do believe KK will fight to keep his players.

Both Oba and his advisors have recently rejecting any news about him leaving United. Martins said he like being a Toon player and would want to be involve in Keegan’s next revolution this summer. Michael Owen, who will miss the chance to play for England because of illnes, is also like to start negotiation for the new contract with Newcastle.

Former Managing Director of London Gambling Club To Run Newcastle United

May 22nd, 2008 by shearyadi

Newcastle United chairman Chris Mort is positive to leave the club this summer to return to his role as co-head of London law firm Freshfields, and Mike Ashley is look set to name Mort’s deputy chairman Derek Llambias as the new Newcastle United chairman.

image

Although many of the Toon Army is already known that Chris Mort would be just a temporary figure in his position as the club chairman, but the appoitment of Derek Llambias is possibly raising another doubt for the future of the Magpies, as this club will lead by someone else outside the football field.

Magpies zone contributor Clarky is prefer us see hire a proper Chairman or Chief Executive, say of David Dein’s standing, to who Ashley could totally delegate responsibility for running the football club.

The appointment of Chris Mort in July last year was also questionable at first time, as he has no experience in managing a football club before. But, many Toon supporters believe that Chris Mort main job is to balancing the club accounts and to free the club from debts.

Former club owner Sir John Hall said Mort’s departure was to be expected when Mike Ashley took over his club and hired Chris Mort to head up his negotiating team.

“I think he probably had an agreement to stay and complete the legalities needed to take the club private and consolidate Mike’s takeover.” Sir John said. “Give the people time. It’s a business and you’ve got to consolidate, learn and go forward. I’m sure we’ve done that this season.”

I hope so…
