Following Manchester United’s title victory in a chase with the Magpies during the 1995-96 season, and their 4-0 drubbing at Wembley in Charity Shield, Newcastle certainly enjoyed this 5-0 destruction of the Red Devils. – Soccernet
Newcastle got the important opening goal in the 12th minute. In a goal-mouth scramble, headed the ball towards the Manchester goal-line but it appeared to have been cleared.
The officials awarded the goal, as the whole ball had just sneaked over the line. The Sky television replays indicated that the decision was correct.
There was little doubt about Newcastle’s second goal, when David Ginola received the ball with his back to goal on the edge of the visitor’s box. A turn and shot the ball flew over Schmeichel’s.
The second half was more of the same. Alan Shearer destroyed the Red’s defence in a wing run and his marvellous cross was met by Les Ferdinand, who powered a thunderous header into the Schmeichel’s net.
Shearer arrived on the scoresheet himself just in time to get a shot-in a loose ball inside the six yard box. Both Peter Beardsley and Les Ferdinand had shots saved by Schmeichel.
Newcastle scintillating display was capped with a glorious fifth goal from Philippe Albert in 83rd minute. Following nice possession interplay by the Magpies, Albert collected the ball deep and took a few strides forward before cooly chipped a briliant 25-yard shot.
