Newcastle United v Bordeaux Europa league match review

Comfortable win in the end, although at 0-0 I thought they looked decent going forward. Despite having Tiote, and Anita playing in front of the back four we are still not protecting them the way we did at the start of last season.

Shola Ameobi score United’s first goal against Bordeaux

During this early period we made a lot of silly passing errors surrendering possession, which has been the story of our season so far.

At 2-0 and then 3-0 we played with a lot more confidence and retained possession much better, and basically played out the game fairly comfortably.

I thought Obertan was probably our MOTM, laying the 1st goal on a plate for Shola and generally causing Bordeaux problems down their right. He also got back well to help Ferguson.

Gabriel Obertan on one of best match performance

Cabaye seems to be gradually getting his form back, and created most of what we created in the game. Williamson was the pick of the defence for me. Simpson did ok defensively on his return, but his use of the ball was generally poor.

He looked to be stretching out his hamstring a couple of times towards the end, so he may not yet be 100%.

Cisse took his goal well, from the only real service he had all night and generally held the ball up well. I don't think there is really too much wrong with his confidence – I suspect it is a lack of decent service from midfield that he is suffering from.

Papiss Demba Cissé score United’s third goal against Bordeaux

Good win that leaves us comfortably placed in the mini-league, although I suspect Bordeaux may be a different proposition on their own patch.
