Match verdict against Manchester United

A really encouraging performance that will hopefully give the squad the lift they possibly needed. I thought KK got it spot on tactically, and the majority of the problems we had we created for ourselves through sloppy passing.

ManU had a few chances in the 1st half, but we really shut them down in the second. We did ok defensively, and for the first time for ages the defence were well supported by our midfield. Given was faultless, and made a couple of excellent saves.

Taylor had a good game, Colo improved as the game wore on, but I thought we were a little suspect at full backs. Habib Beye hasn’t as yet got back to the form he showed last season, and for me N’Zogbia simply isn’t a full back.

Midfield has actually been perhaps my biggest concern, but they were really effective today. Butt had a decent game, if a little casual in possession at times. Gutierrez, Guthrie, Milner and Duff ran miles chasing and harrying and at times controlled possession.

In addition to supporting Zog, Gutierrez got forward and created most of the positive things for us in their half. He looked a very good player today. Actually, for me Guthrie was only just beaten to MOTM by Gutierrez.

Martins kept Rio and Vidic occupied, and scored from a terrific leap and well-directed header. It was a pity Taylor got injured when Martins fell on him, and ManU took advantage of Taylor’s absence when undergoing teatment when Fletcher got across Zog to turn in a good Rooney cross.

A really good and encouraging start to the season, and hopefully something we can now build on.
